Skills Assessment

Obtaining a positive skills assessment is a crucial step in the process of skilled migration under the general skilled migration and employer-sponsored visa programs in Australia. Skills assessments involve evaluating an applicant’s qualifications and/or work experience against the suitability of a nominated occupation.

The following is a list of some of the visas that require applicants to provide a positive skills assessment:

  • Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa (subclass 186)
  • Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) visa (subclass 187)
  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) – Points-tested stream
  • Skilled Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 489)
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)
  • Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional (provisional) visa (subclass 494)
  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa (subclass 482)

Different assessing bodies are responsible for evaluating the suitability of various occupations. For example, if an applicant seeks a skills assessment for an Accounting degree, organizations like CPA, CA, or IPA can provide the assessment. Some occupations may require mandatory work experience after completing the degree or qualification, while others may not have such a requirement.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to obtain the necessary skills assessment. Each assessing body has its own assessment process, procedures, criteria, timeframes, and associated charges.
